About the Author

R Ananthanarayan (1913–1998): Dr R Ananthanarayan graduated from Madras Medical College in 1940, and began his illustrious medical career in the Indian Army, serving as Quarter Master and Medical Officer in charge of wards in Sudan and Egypt. He also served in Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Syria, Malaya and Java. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon at the Government hospital in Calicut in 1946, moving to Stanley Medical College the following year. He obtained a Diploma in Bacteriology (DB) from London in 1951 and his PhD in 1953. For the next eight years, he worked as Professor of Bacteriology in the newly established Trivandrum Medical College, after which he assumed the post of Principal and Professor at Calicut Medical College. In May 1967, he was transferred to Kottayam Medical College from where he retired in April 1969. Retirement did not slow him down, however, and he served as Professor of Microbiology at Gulbarga Medical College till 1972. From 1972–1975, he served as Professor Emeritus at Trivandrum Medical College and Adviser to the Kerala Government on Laboratory Services. During his career, Dr Ananthanarayan served as Examiner for Microbiology in different universities, was a member of several commissions and was awarded the Arun Banerjee Memorial Award in 1979. A Founding Member of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists, he was elected President in 1976 and also served as President of the Association of Microbiologists in India in 1980. A greatly respected and revered teacher, he published more than 64 papers in reputed journals. CK Jayaram Paniker (1932–2014): Dr CK Jayaram Paniker graduated from Madras Medical College in 1955 and completed his postgraduate degree from All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1962. During the initial phases of his career, he worked at the Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor, Trivandrum Medical College and as Founder–Professor of Department of Microbiology at Kottayam Medical College. He was Principal, Director and Head of the Department of Microbiology at Calicut Medical College and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Calicut University. Well known for his command over the English language and for his sparkling sense of humour, Dr Paniker performed yeoman service for Microbiology in India. He was the recipient of the BC Roy Award, and the Kerala Government honoured him with the post of Professor Emeritus in Microbiology. He headed many advisory committees and published several research papers, especially in the fields of typhoid and influenza. Reba Kanungo: Editor: Reba Kanungo is Dean of Research, and Professor and Head of the Department of Microbiology, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), prior to which she taught at JIPMER for over 15 years. She is a member of several national and international organisations, as well as of the committees of NACO, ICMR and CTD. Dr Kanungo is the Editor-in-Chief of JCRSM, former Editor, IJMM, and past President, IAMM. She is on the editorial boards of several national and international journals, and has published over 100 research papers and editorials.
